Financial support for small businesses

Statement from Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti
December 21, 2020

As province-wide lockdown proceeds, I applaud Premier Ford’s additional support for small business...

A province-wide lockdown starting December 26th and lasting for 28 days has been introduced by the Ontario Government as a means to reduce the number of cases and lessen the demand on hospitals and healthcare workers. Local small businesses will be facing current restrictions until late January. The provincial government currently has financial support for small businesses to help pay for utilities and property taxes, along with other expenses. I encourage small businesses to apply for assistance at covid-19.ontario.ca/covid-19-help-businesses-ontario. Today Premier Doug Ford annouFnced the Ontario Small Business Support Grant, a financial support of up to $20,000 for businesses who must close or significantly restrict services due to the Province-wide lockdown.

Today’s announcement is a stark reminder that although we have vaccines, the road ahead is still a long one until the distribution of those vaccines are widely implemented. A reopening plan for business will be required well in advance of the end of the lockdown period and that significant effort should be made to ensure that all businesses, big and small, should have a fair chance to experience the benefits of a reopened and recovering economy. I will continue to advocate for more fairer options for small businesses.

In the meantime, we must all do our part and adhere to the safest possible Christmas and holiday experience. Connect with family and friends virtually and do not have any social gatherings with people outside of your household. The fact is that almost 50% of cases in York Region are coming from close contact transmission (family and friends). We can make a difference if we do the right things.
